Overview

Once a plantation bungalow set on a two acre estate, the Plantation hotel's appeal is its location, right on the banks of the Kelani River and surrounded by tropical jungle. The scenic location brought it fame when it was used for the filming of the epic 'A Bridge over the River Kwai'. The area is much more than an old film site and is particularly popular with nature lovers. The hotel itself is relatively small with just eight airconditioned rooms and is often full. The reception, rooms, restaurants and bars are spread out and connected by covered pathways. The restaurant sits right over the river and is ideal for long lazy meals and a convivial drink with friends. Delicious Sri Lankan rice and curries are served here that attracts many a traveler to stop by for a quick lunch.

Location:
The Plantation Hotel is situated 90km from Colombo in the sleepy riverside village of Kitulgala, sandwiched between the famous west coast and the towering central highlands. A small picturesque spot on the banks of the Kelani River, Plantation Hotel is the ideal stopover destination, breaking up long journeys, but is also has a much appeal as a destination in its own right, including beautiful forest walks, rewarding bird-watching, whitewater rafting and canoeing. The journey from Colombo will take about 2.5 hours

Accommodation

There are eight air-conditioned rooms - seven doubles and one single - all furnished with timber and steel canopied twin and double beds. Rooms are clean and comfortable and have attached bathrooms with h/w showers, wash basin, and w/c. In room facilities include mini fridges, satellite TV, and IDD telephone.

Facilities

Located at two different levels, there are two restaurants and bars overlooking the river, serving Sri Lankan and Western food mainly buffet style. There is also a library and reading area, doctor / nurse on call, hotel safe, room service, and indoor games including billiards. The reception area has a fax and photo copier. The hotel organises bushwalks, hiking, trekking and white water rafting.
